SMEG Touchscreen Map Updates

Post by GiveMeABreak » 08 Jan 2019, 16:18

That's about right - just the same way as they have abandoned thousands and thousands of PSA owners who can no longer update their Navigations Systems which in my case was a £2k option almost! They have not commissioned HERE maps to make any more versions for half a doze systems now, so we are mostly all stuck with 2016 maps (which of course are a year behind, so 2015)!

There are a group of people trying to modify the BMW maps for the Harman Becker systems used on their vehicles in order to convert them for use in the PSA systems - but limited success! This is what it has come to wilful abandonment!

Wow. I wondered what was going on with my 2017 maps. Theoretically I have Free twice-a-year updates for five years until July 2020. The only update I have received this year is a 2016 update. That explains a lot. And, of course, you can't just update the EUROPE Maps any longer as they don't fit on the allocated 8GB in the car, so one of the Maps has to be sacrificed at every update. In reality this isn't a great problem, but who knows whether they will suddenly get the urge to visit Eastern Europe, or Scandinavia, or anywhere else that was sacrificed at the last update...?

I LOVE Citroens but my love for the Company is rapidly turning to a nasty unpleasant emotion.

PAY ATTENTION PSA. Watch and see if I ever buy another vehicle from you....

If you've got the SMEG Touchscreen, the latest update is 2018-2, so I would get onto them if I were you and get the next udpate.

There have actually been three updates this year. The second update (which came early in May IIRC) downloaded a file named 42006.zip. This is about 5.2GB in size (which I think equates to 2018-2019 2ed and GR416). Then there's a third minor update of 670MB, 42009.zip. This contains just information about France to incorporate the new 80Km/h speed limits.

Yes, it is a PITA. All you can do is keep the pen-drive safe and if you visit such a country delete one of the others to make space.

PSA are aware of the problem, sorry situation. Their response (on another forum) to a direct question about the lack of space is - I'd like to let you know that there is not enough memory on the navigation system to complete all the map updates. You should uncheck the map updates you don`t need on the screen listing the map databases. - So, they know and that's the fudge answer

Thanks Paul-R
Yes, I had 42006 installed - minus Eastern Europe to allow the main countries to fit (JUST.!!) - the files of which are all 3rd or 4th Quarter 2017. Then I received the 42009 update which I couldn't install until I had deleted 42006 France. I duly uninstalled it, and now 42009 France won't install as my car doesn't like any DRM code that I have. Any ideas?

I was never actually notified about 42009. I found it on this Forum with a Download Link and DRM code. As I said, it doesn't work, so my next step is to try to reinstall my 42006 France. Fingers crossed. [-o< [-o< [-o<

When you say DRM code, do you mean the code that you have put in when updating the maps? If so then it won't be right for you as they are specific to the VIN of each car. Unless the code was specified as being for your car and came with the download then it won't be right. Using someone else's just won't work.

There are ways round this but as your car is still covered by free updates your first port of call has to be customer service and ask them for the correct code.

I have heard of that before. When a poster on another forum (for Peugeots) phoned up and asked about this special France only file he was given a download link and the correct code. No apology about not being contacted pre-emptively though.

Yes, DRM (initials taken from the screen in the car) is the code for each set of maps for the car. I should have realised the one I downloaded wouldn't be correct for my car - stupid boy !! I won't bother about trying to sort out 42009 France now. I'll reinstall my 42006 France and wait for the next general update. Provided, of course, that my car hasn't thrown all its satnav toys out of its pram.

I have read about the Satnav for my car showing speed limits as a "proper" satnav should do, but mine doesn't. I have the monthly Risk Areas download which works well in France but displays very little here. It knows of the existence of very few UK South East and Midlands Camera locations and very definitely doesn't care what speed I drive at or what the local speed limit is when driving. Is this available in the UK? If yes, from where?

As far as I know, the version I have in the car (minus the France Map which I am about to reinstall today) is 2018-2 (42006.zip). However, when I look at the individual maps in the car they vary from v112.0 to v112.1 (Italy and East Europe 112.1 - all the rest 112.0). I will download 42006 and 42009 again from the (CORRECT) website and put it all back together the way it is supposed to be - minus at least one country (a real pain in the posterior) so that the most important maps are visible and see what happens.

Thanks again for your help.

I've never noticed what the screen says when I'm updating! To me DRM means Digital Rights Management, which I suppose is apt for this process as it's designed to stop people updating their maps willy-nilly.

I'm not sure I understand why you're not getting on to customer service to ask for the pukka 42009 update. Unless you've no chance of going to France for several months of course.

The satnav only displays speed limits if they're in the download. In practice they're only on main roads and motorways. Definitely no side roads. The camera locations (safety areas!) is a different file and, to be honest, I don't bother with them. Apart from the obvious fact that they're there to check speed compliance, there's no link to the displayed speed limit. AFAIK there's no way to display current speed in the way that standalone satnavs can do.

Don't forget you won't get speed camera warnings in France from official sources as they are not legal. Instead they have 'high risk' areas, than just warn you to be wary when entering such an area. They will not pinpoint or show any known radar sites or speed cameras though. Mr Macron needs all the Euros he can get to pay the yellow vests :-D

If you look at the date from CURR_VERS_NAVI.TXT, which is in the DATA folder, you'll find information on which countries are more recent with their data to update the satnav.

For instance from the 42006 files the information is as follows:

CID:001,112,1,4,2017,"21/12/2017","ITALY","HERE"
CID:002,112,0,4,2017,"16/11/2017","FRANCE","HERE"
CID:003,112,0,4,2017,"17/11/2017","SPAIN/PORTUGAL","HERE"
CID:004,112,2,4,2017,"2/2/2018","BENELUX","HERE"
CID:005,112,0,4,2017,"16/11/2017","UNITED_KINGDOM","HERE"
CID:006,112,0,4,2017,"18/11/2017","SCANDINAVIA","HERE"
CID:012,112,0,4,2017,"18/11/2017","GERMANY","HERE"
CID:013,112,0,4,2017,"14/11/2017","MIDDLE_EUROPE","HERE"
CID:016,112,1,4,2017,"21/11/2017","RUSSIA","HERE"
CID:020,112,0,4,2017,"16/11/2017","SOUTHERN_EASTERN_EUROPE","HERE"
CID:021,112,1,4,2017,"27/3/2018","NORTH_EAST_EASTERN_EUROPE","HERE"
CID:022,112,0,4,2017,"17/11/2017","NORTH_WEST_EASTERN_EUROPE","HERE"

And from 42009 there's only:

CID:002,113,1,2,2018,"10/5/2018","FRANCE","HERE"

Benelux should be 112.2 according to the list above - unless that's the country you haven't installed.

Yes, my experience of the French "High Risk" areas is good, and they all coincide with the High Risk areas reported by my TomTom 5200 which I run in tandem with the car (the car takes dodgy routes quite often).
Oh, what a shame... all those vestes jaunes interfering with m. Macron's high life... I really feel for him...

oops.! I missed the Benelux Map. It was, as you say - 112.2 … the Map I have sacrificed is the South East Europe Map. Will be uninstalling and reinstalling the new France Map (42009) in the morning.

Is there any known way to purge the 8GB (reported as 6.9GB) in the car, to remove any fragmented files left behind by previous updates? There is a massive 364MB free in the memory which has prevented the installation of the 486MB South Eastern Europe Maps, not that I'm going to be driving around there in the near (or distant) future, of course.
The only other mapping service I have is the Europe Risk Areas subscription which is updated monthly. I have no music in the car memory but my phone contacts list is in there. Citroen UK's response to questions in this vein are less useful than a chocolate tea pot, so perhaps some of our Forum members have the K-now H-ow...?

How does one activate the Speed monitoring function within the Satnav? I have read about it being displayable, but have not found any way to do it.

All Forum Member help is most gratefully accepted. =D> =D> =D>

I have now reinstalled all the 42006 Europe Maps barring North Eastern Europe to fit the main maps into the alleged 8GB that is really only 6.9GB. Ran the car OK for 24 hours and today I removed the 42006 version of France (112.1) and updated it to 42009 France (113.1). Had to uninstall a second Country - South Eastern Europe to make space, but at least I have all the main Countries that I would ever possibly visit installed.
BUT..!! Still NO SPEED INDICATION on ANY ROAD. I have never seen it since I bought the car new in July '15.

I spent nearly 30 minutes talking to Here in Holland about this, and they don't understand the problem fully, so that will go on another day. They do, however say that their satnav mapping DOES display speeds and limits (otherwise why would they have produced 42009.zip France 113.1..?) From bitter experience it is no good whatsoever talking to Citroen UK "Customer (non)Service" so I am appealing to the cognoscenti of this Forum for help in figuring out why the speed limits or actual speeds are not displayed in my car (C4 Grand Picasso Bluehdi 150 EAT6). What makes things even more strange is that Here issued a France update with the new 80kmh speed limits (42009.zip), so why are they invisible? I have done over 15,000 miles in France, Belgium and Holland since I bought this car in 2015, and while the Multicity function was working, there was the most brilliant traffic monitor, showing speeds and speed limits plus road blockages accurate to the metre. As soon as PSA ditched Multicity in 2016, all that went out the window, and I have never seen a speed limit or an actual speed displayed since.

When I go travelling, I use a TomTom 5200 as well as the car satnav because I find the navigation provided by the car takes strange routes on a regular basis - AND it doesn't verify my road speed like the TomTom does. :grr: :grr: :grr:

In case it is relevant, the Firmware version in the car (as supplied new) is SMEG 5.2.C.R1 dated 08-0-15. Every other 2015 Picasso I have seen here seems to be running SMEG 5.4.xxx - should mine be updated? If yes, is it customer doable, or should I pay PSA to have it done?
